p class="text_indent">In the ancient village of Sayram, which today is a neighborhood in the eastern part of Shymkent, stands one of the most revered monuments of South Kazakhstan – the Mausoleum of Karashash Ana. It is the main “female” monument of the city, dedicated to the mother of the great Sufi thinker Khoja Ahmed Yasawi.
Karashash Ana, whose real name was Aisha Bibi (not to be confused with the historical figure of the same name from Taraz), was the wife of Ibrahim Ata and the mother of the future spiritual mentor of the Turkic world, Khoja Ahmed Yasawi. She possessed a special жизненная энергия (life energy), had the ability to heal people, interpret dreams, and always helped those in need. She was regarded as an ideal of motherhood and feminine wisdom. Every year, thousands of women visit her mausoleum to pray for childbirth and family well-being.
The first structure at the burial site of Karashash Ana was built in the 13th century. Over time, it was severely affected by climate conditions and groundwater levels. In the 19th century, the building was reconstructed using the best materials of that time. White fired bricks give the mausoleum a sense of purity and lightness, while wooden elements and carved ornaments have been well preserved to this day.
The mausoleum measures 27 × 27 meters with a height of about 5 meters. The dome, set on a drum, fits harmoniously into the architectural composition. The portal is designed in the traditions of late medieval architecture. At the entrance, on the left side, there is a granite pedestal shaped like an open book, with verses from the Quran engraved in Arabic along with their translation into Kazakh.
Karashash Ana was not only a respected woman of her time but also a patron of education. She encouraged learning among ordinary people, inspiring them by her example. Today, her mausoleum is an important center of spiritual pilgrimage in the Turkestan region .
