IBRAHIM ATA

The Ibrahim Ata Mausoleum is an architectural monument located in the South Kazakhstan region. It stands on the outskirts of the northwestern part of the village of Sairam, on a high hill near the road leading to the village of Aksu. The mausoleum was built around the 16th–17th centuries over the grave of the spiritual leader Sheikh Ibrahim, the father of Khoja Ahmed Yasawi.

The mausoleum belongs to the group of domed monuments typical of medieval architecture. The earlier structure (12th-14th centuries), unable to withstand the test of time, collapsed. A new mausoleum built in the mid-19th century was damaged during the earthquake of 1950, when its dome collapsed. In the early 20th century, a low four-pitched iron roof was installed in place of the destroyed dome, and a cone-shaped dome was erected in its center.

The structure is a single-chamber, square-plan building. The area of the Ibrahim Ata mausoleum is 7.2 × 7.2 meters, and its height is 8.25 meters. The structure has two levels and consists of one main room. The entrance is located on the southern side, while a window framed in wood is situated on the western side. The interior walls are plastered, and the floor is paved with bricks and coated with clay mixed with cement.

In the early 1990s, using funds allocated by the government, the road that had passed very close to the mausoleum walls was moved 20 meters away, and the architectural monument was reinforced with a layer of earth at its base.

In ancient Sairam, which in the Middle Ages became one of the centers for the spread of Islam, many spiritual mentors and scholars lived. One of them was Ibrahim Ata, the father of the renowned Khoja Ahmed Yasawi, who became a teacher to thousands of murids (disciples). Ibrahim Ata was a farmer by occupation. At the same time, legends about his holiness and extraordinary gift of foresight have been preserved among the people. Manuscripts kept in the Sairam Museum testify to the noble origin and genealogy of Ibrahim Ata .
